I will try to keep this short. It just hit me tonight that I may have discovered my dad’s plan. I am 29 years old, work from home as a programmer, still live at home. I always wanted to move out, work hard and save money, but my dad always tried to scare off my girlfriends, convince me not to date them, and woke me up in the middle of the night so I would be tired at work.

So the thought occured to me that perhaps he did these things to keep me at home. We always hear how parents want their kids out of the house, but his setup is perfect. He is extremely dependent on others, he cannot do hardly do anything himself either due to stupidity, laziness, or both. So I basically do everything around the house, and he always comments how happy he is to have me as a free security guard, money lender, and servant basically.

Since I have been doing the grocery shopping lately, I realize that I only spend about $100 per month for my food. So all he does is pay my share of electricity, water, and food and he has himself a cheap servant.

It is extremely hard for me to work now, and I think it is because all of my life he has pushed me into staying home and not working. I wonder if this is common? I must admit when given the choice to live rent free and set your own schedule for everything, or work a 10+ hour job with an asshole boss M-T and can no longer have time to go to the gym, I rather stay home and work for the little money I make online.
My dad is divorced twice and all he does is sit at home and watch TV. So it isn’t like he wants me to leave so he can have a social life like many parents who want their kids to leave.
